Why gravure suits volume rice, oil and food packaging
Rice, cooking oil and other food products often need printed packaging in repeat quantities. Once a product has established demand, the brand design, product information and pack format may remain in use across continuing production runs. That combination of volume and stable artwork is where gravure printing belongs.

Several flavours or product variants may also require different artwork components, so the quantity for each version needs to be clear. An overall total without a design split is not enough to compare the routes properly.
Buyers should consider the expected life of every printed detail. Product names, business information, barcodes, ingredients, instructions and other required copy should be final before gravure cylinders are approved. If a brand is about to change its identity or is still testing its claims and layout, a smaller digital batch may avoid committing too early.
There is no single run length at which every job must move from digital to gravure. Bag format, material, print coverage, number of designs and finishing requirements all affect the decision. Once demand is established and the artwork has settled, the route should be reviewed again. A product does not need to stay with digital printing simply because its first batch used that process. For either process, the bag still has to work. Contents, fill weight, dimensions, sealing method, storage and handling conditions remain part of the production specification. Changing the print process does not correct an unsuitable bag format or incomplete artwork.
Prepare the bag specification before the artwork
Start by confirming what will be packed and how the pack will be filled, sealed, stored and handled. Define the bag or roll format and record the working dimensions. Seals, gussets, folds, openings and closures affect the printable area, so they must be settled before the design is locked to a production layout.
Mark the front face and print direction. A design can appear upright on an artboard yet face the wrong way when the film enters a packing line or when a finished bag is filled. For film supplied in roll, the winding and print orientation need to match the intended converting or filling process. For finished bags, the opening and display face need to be unambiguous.
If the job replaces current packaging, provide the existing bag or roll together with written dimensions and the previous job reference where available. State what will remain unchanged and list every requested change. A physical sample is a useful reference, but it should not be the only record of the requirement.
Material direction also belongs in the early discussion. Prepare artwork for gravure production
Supply the production artwork and a PDF reference that shows the intended appearance. Use clear filenames with the product name and version, and keep draft files separate from approved files. The layout must follow the confirmed printable area. Keep important text, barcodes and design elements clear of seals, folds, gussets and closures. Include the required bleed and linked assets in the production file as requested. Fonts, images and logos should be supplied in a form that can be processed without substitutions changing the design.
Identify the intended colours and provide an approved reference where colour is important. A phone or office monitor is not a physical colour standard. Screen brightness and settings vary, and printed colour is affected by the ink, film and production conditions. The proofing discussion should state what reference will control the job.
The product owner must verify every visible word and number. Check product names, contact details, net contents, barcodes, ingredients, instructions and any other required information.
